Many photographers, in particular those who like to capture landscapes, may wish to know the times of sunrise and sunset for any given location. The times given here are for Bognor Regis in West Sussex and Land's End in Cornwall, to show how the times vary even over a relatively short distance, in this case about 360 km (220 miles).
If you are one of the majority of people on the planet who are denied the pleasure of residing in either of these desirable locations, simply type the latitude and longitude of your residence or destination in the boxes below and press 'Calculate'. (Coming soon).
Dawn and dusk are the theoretical times when it starts to get light in the morning or ceases to be light in the evening. The actual sunrise and sunset times are the theoretical times when the sun's orb starts to appear or disappear over the horizon. Obviously the times vary from the theoretical depending upon altitude and weather conditions, among other factors, but they should give some indication of what time you need to set your alarm clock to go and capture that award-winning sunrise photograph.
Although the solstice on 21st June is now a distant memory, for a while we were fooled into believing that spring would never end. April, May and June brought us sunshine tempered by little rain and temperatures occasionally creeping into the low twenties. Then came July... What, in theory, should be the hottest part of the year with long, lazy, hazy sunny days and gentle sea breezes is anything but, of course. Heavy, black clouds race across the sky chased by storm force winds sending torrential rain crashing to earth to smash all plant life into oblivion. Summer is here! The days get gradually shorter but we won't really notice until 'Glorious Goodwood'...
